Boosting Milk Supply

Updated: Mar 26, 2024

Boosting Milk Supply: Tips and Tricks Breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural way to nourish your baby, but it's not always easy. Many mothers may face challenges in producing enough milk for their little ones. If you're struggling with low milk supply, don't worry - Blue Ridge Lactation is here to help. We understand the importance of breastfeeding and want to provide you with valuable tips and tricks to boost your milk supply.

1. Stay Hydrated: One of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy milk supply is proper hydration. Make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water, and consider keeping a water bottle nearby during breastfeeding or pumping sessions.

2. Nurse or Pump Frequently: The more you stimulate your breasts, the more milk your body will produce. Try to nurse or pump at least 8-12 times a day, including during the night. If your baby is having difficulty latching or you're unable to nurse, consider using a breast pump to stimulate milk production.

3. Use Breast Compression: Breast compression is a technique that can help increase milk flow during breastfeeding. Simply apply gentle pressure to your breast while your baby is nursing. This can help your baby get more milk and stimulate your body to produce more.

4. Power Pumping: Power pumping involves pumping for short periods of time with short breaks in between. This technique mimics cluster feeding and can help increase milk supply. Try power pumping for 10 minutes, resting for 10 minutes, and repeating this cycle for an hour.

5. Try Lactation-Boosting Foods and Herbs: Certain foods and herbs are believed to have lactation-boosting properties. Oatmeal, fennel, and brewer's yeast are some examples. Incorporate these into your diet to see if they make a difference in your milk supply. This is recommended under the guidance of a lactation consultant to review potential areas of concern that could be contributing to low-supply.

6. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out for support if you're struggling with low milk supply. Blue Ridge Lactation is here to provide you with the guidance and assistance you need.
